ABC-DS

The Alzheimer Biomarkers Consortium-Down Syndrome (ABC-DS) is a longitudinal study funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) INCLUDE (INvestigation of Co-occurring conditions across the Lifespan to Understand Down syndromE) project. The goal of ABC-DS is to follow a cohort of adults with Down syndrome over time to identify early biomarkers that may herald the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. UC Irvine is one site of 17 colllaborating on this study. Learn more about this study.

Christy Hom, PhD is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and Lead Psychologist at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. She is a board-certified and bilingual neuropsychologist. Dr. Hom specializes in the assessment of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. Her research focuses on the cognitive development of children with Down syndrome and the consequences of aging and Alzheimer’s Disease in adults with Down syndrome. She earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and completed fellowship training in Health Psychology at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. She has 30 years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities in research studies and clinical settings at the University of California, Los Angeles, Kennedy Krieger Institute/Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and UC Irvine.

Wayne Silverman, PhD

Wayne Silverman, PhD

Project Scientist

Dr. Silverman began conducting research on various aspects of developmental disorders in 1972 as a Research Scientist at the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities (IBR), becoming Chief of its Department of Psychology in 1989. He moved to the Kennedy Krieger Institute and The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2006, serving as a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and becoming Director of its Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center. He then joined the Department of Pediatrics of the University of California, Irvine in 2018 to continue pursuing his longstanding program of research (begun in 1987) focused on Alzheimer’s disease in adults with Down syndrome.

Alicia Hernandez-Acuna

Alicia Hernandez-Acuna

Clinical Coordinator

Alicia Hernandez-Acuna has been a research coordinator for 9 different Down syndrome studies at UCI over the past 16 years and worked as a medical assistant for 5 years before joining our team. She handles the scheduling of study procedures, conducts study partner interviews, assists with the collection of biospecimens and imaging scans, and oversees correspondence with all of our research participants and their staff or families.

Eric Doran, MS

Eric Doran, MS

Clinical Coordinator

Eric Doran serves as the primary community liaison and leads research participant recruitment for the Center.  For over 20 years he has held various roles within UCI, leading clinical and research activities. He holds a masters degree in Genetic Counseling from UC Irvine. Mr. Doran’s research interests are focused on furthering understanding of development and aging in persons with Down syndrome with an emphasis on the biological relationship between Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease.

Kelley Kilday, BS

Kelley Kilday, BS

Clinical Coordinator

Kelley is a UC Irvine alumna and has worked at UCI for over 10 years. She began her career at UCI working in the Alzheimer’s Disease research lab of Dr. David Cribbs and joined the Down Syndrome Program team 6 years ago as a study coordinator. She is a liaison between families/participants and the research team; coordinating and scheduling participant visits, conducting study cogntive tests and study partner interviews, assisting with participant’s neuroimaging scans and biospecimen collection, and working with research regulatory agencies.

Sophia Shaka, BS

Sophia Shaka, BS

Clinical Coordinator

Sophia is a UC Los Angeles alumna, graduating in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience and a minor in the Spanish language, with both college and departmental honors. During her time at UCLA, she authored five research publications in space microgravity research under principal investigator Dr. Araceli Espinosa-Jeffrey. She now works as a clinical research coordinator for the UC Irvine CFAR-DS. She plans to apply to graduate school to pursue a PhD in neuroscience.

Diana Valencia, BS

Diana Valencia, BS

Clinical Coordinator

Diana is the bilingual research coordinator for ABC-DS. Before joining the lab, she attended UC San Diego and received a B.S. in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience. During her time at UCSD, she had the opportunity to work under the direct supervision of Dr. Jeffrey Max as a research assistant where they observed the neurobehavioral outcomes of children with orthopedic injuries through imaging and assessments. Diana chose this lab because of their dedication to help those in overlooked communities. She hopes to apply one day what she learned in this laboratory towards her pursuit of a PhD in Clinical Psychology. Outside of the lab, Diana enjoys spending time with all of her pets, crocheting, and baking.

Sierra Wright, BS

Sierra Wright, BS

Neuropathology Coordinator

Sierra started out at UC Irvine as a work study student in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center’s Tissue Repository. After graduating from UCI, she continued working in the Repository as a lab assistant. She has now been a part the ABC-DS study as the Neuropathology Coordinator for the last 3 years, recruiting and registering participants for brain donation. These generously donated brains provide so much valuable information and data to help researchers in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
